Vocal Music At Horace Mann School
Welcome to music class at Horace Mann! We take delight in the way music makes our school community stronger and more joyful.
Music class is a 'growth mindset' laboratory where we celebrate the motto "practice makes progress." We give every student opportunities to develop their enjoyment of music, sense of play, creativity, and performance skills.
Each class visits the music room once a week, and we spend our time across all grade levels learning songs for our performances. While we rehearse, we are learning how to play instruments (hand percussion, xylophone, recorder, and ukulele), connecting with music from a wide variety of cultures and time periods, incorporating movement and dance into our expression of music, learning music vocabulary and symbols, and exploring the many ways music shapes how we feel.
The performances are often cited as highlights for students and families in their school experience; they are shared with students and teachers during the school day, and then again in the evening for families and friends. Fourth and fifth graders also team up to produce a musical each spring in addition to their winter vocal concert.
Please feel free to reach out with any questions about the music opportunities at Horace Mann School–
