The theme this year was "Reading Brings Us the World". 6th grade students roller-bladed through a skit of their travels around the world to find excellent books. | | The Queen holds court | Their travels took them to see the Queen of England (Mrs. Long), a Norse outdoors-woman (Ms. Dahl), a Chinese wise woman (Mrs. Ronnei), and a shivery Antarctica explor (Mrs. Schwartz).
Students learned many things about the Readathon. | | The Wise One tells us more about reading | Each day students read and keep track of their minutes. They ask relatives and friends for monetary pledges to support their reading. At the end of the week, they turn in their minutes. The minutes get converted to miles to see how far | | A good book always warms a cold night | we travel in the world. At the end of the month, students plan to reach 400,000 minutes!
Prizes were an important incentive for the students. This year's prizes ranged from a tattoo of the Readathon logo, to a pedometer for tracking | | Students listen with bated breath for the next prize | their real mileage, to a t-shirt, to a book from the Usborne Book Fair. Special events were scheduled to build the excitement and enthusiasm. Students will take a tour of the Earth from the inside and out when the Earth Balloon visits. | | "Say cheese" Readathon Assembly performers | Special celebrity guest readers will share their love of reading with the students. Finally, if students reach their goal, Mr. Litwin will dress up as a globe and serve ice cream!
