Below are
the goals for this year’s Read-a-thon:
1.To have Horace Mann
School students collectively read more than 500,000 minutes between Oct.
1-31. If they succeed, Mr. Litwin will dress up as an alien and ride into
the gym riding a hover craft at the closing ceremony!
2.To raise
$13,200. Money raised by this fundraiser is critical to the success of
the PTA goals this to fully fund classroom and school projects.
Set a Daily Reading Goal
The Read-a-thon is
based on minutes read, not how many books are read. This allows students with
different reading speeds to compete on a level playing field for recognition and
for prizes. It also encourages students to read at or above their reading
level.
Please work with your
child to set a daily reading goal, which includes both home and
school reading time. A good estimate for school reading time is 45 minutes per
school day.
Minutes read
by parents to their children also count toward the goal! Below
are suggested at-home reading goals for students by grade
level:
Kindergarten:
20 minutes per day
1st and
2nd grade: 25 minutes per day
3rd,
4th, 5th and 6th grades: 30
minutes per day
How Families Can Help
Please
review the Read-a-thon materials so that you understand what is involved in the
Read-a-thon. Then help your child secure sponsors and keep accurate records of
daily home reading time using the Calendar Tally Sheet. Again, teachers will
track read-aloud and silent reading time at school.
